The Planning Commission Office is composed of the Planning, Building and Environmental Services Departments and has many functions. The staff serves three Commissions and Boards - the Planning Commission, the Board of Adjustment and the License Commission, as well as the Board of Supervisors. Planning The Planning personnel maintain, interpret and update the long-range plan for county development. The DeSoto County 2030 Comprehensive Plan is designed as a planning tool to direct development and manage growth. Based on input from the community itself and from professionals, the plan states goals and policies that support ordinances and planning decisions. The Planning Department is involved in transportation planning for the County, rezoning case evaluation and subdivision and site plan review. They also maintain the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) to identify the areas of floodplain in DeSoto County and administer the floodplain ordinance. Building In addition to processing building permits and conducting on-site inspections of all commercial, residential and industrial building, the Building personnel maintain licensing for all general contractors in the county and sub-contractors such as plumbers, electricians, and mechanical (heating and air) contractors.
Environmental Services The Environmental Services division seeks to Prevent environmental hazards by implementing preventative measures and ordinances that educate and protect the public and private sector. We Protect our local environment and landscape by implementing County ordinances and promoting best management practices to preserve OUR natural resources for the future. We Respond to any and all concerns from our citizens and governmental agencies and work diligently to educate the public on environmental issues.
