Mid-State Opportunity, Inc., a Community Action Agency, provides services through Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Program, which include assistance in the areas of employment, education, health, nutrition, housing, emergency services, transportation and child care to low-income individuals and families become self-sufficient and less dependent on public assistance. They also provide home energy assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to elderly, handicapped and low-income families. Weatherization services are provided through referrals to the Northeast Community Services Agency. With funding from DeSoto County, they provide elderly and handicapped transportation to meal sites, shopping facilities, medical facilities and other places needed by the elderly and to DeSoto Industries for handicapped individuals to work. Home delivered meals are also delivered from meal sites in Southaven and Olive Branch. Additionally, they provide garbage waiver certification for residents who qualify based on income guidelines established by the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors.
