Rubbish

DeSoto County does not have a landfill, but non-household garbage can be taken to the Desoto County Rubbish Pit at 5255 W. Sandidge Road in Olive Branch.  The Rubbish Pit is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 7:00 to 4:00 on Saturday.  The Rubbish Pit is closed on Sundays.  The Rubbish Pit cannot accept household garbage, food containers or batteries.  Examples of acceptable rubbish are tree limbs, leaves, furniture, tires and appliances.  Each citizen can make four free visits to the Rubbish Pit per month.  After the fourth visit, $1.83/yard of rubbish will be charged. The Rubbish Pit can be reached at 662-895-9705 during normal business hours.

Clean Up

Once a year, DeSoto County hosts a community Clean-Up day to allow residents to clear the rubbish from their properties.  Throughout the county, dumpsters are conveniently placed to allow disposal of the the rubbish materials.  These materials include old furniture, mattresses, lumber, drywall, carpet, padding, bricks, limbs, leaves, metal, plastic toys, and fencing. We cannot accept aerosols, all purpose cleaners, antifreeze, batteries, tire, insecticides, herbicides, oil, paint, electronics or household garbage.

Hazardous Household Waste Day

During the fall, DeSoto County holds an event to allow residents the ability to properly dispose of hazardous household waste. This waste includes acids, aerosol cans, art supplies, flammable liquids, furniture polish, floor polish, lead paint, oil based paint, mercury, photography chemicals, solvent adhesives, lighter fluids, oven cleaners, chlorine bleach, cesspool cleaners, fire starters, flea/tick powders, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, poisons, pool chemicals, antifreeze, batteries, brake fluid, carburetor cleaners and degreasers.  These items classified as hazardous household waste should not be included with your regular household waste.
